I just saw the greatest ad. It was for hair care products, Dove, I think, and it opened with a glamour shot of a woman and the statistic “8 out of 10 women have damaged hair*”
But it was the asterisk that was the true genius: “*Based on consumer self-perception.”
That isn’t so much selling us their product as it is bragging that they’ve completely taken over our minds.
